Welcome to Our District

Hermosa Beach is a 1.3 square mile community that has a unique heritage influenced by music and surfing, dubbed “The Best Little Beach City." While Hermosa has captured the hearts of many for its iconic Pier, its history in surfing and music, and its home to many sports, it is the unique community feel and its award-winning schools that attract so many families to the district.

The Hermosa Beach City School District (HBCSD) was established in 1904 and serves approximately 1,300 students in Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade. The District has three schools: the brand-new Hermosa Vista School (completed February 2021), Hermosa Valley School, and the newly reconstructed Hermosa View School (opened September 2022). Graduating students from Hermosa Beach then have the choice to either attend Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach or Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach.

Families looking for a more intimate school experience will love our little school district. We possess high parent-teacher involvement, great volunteer opportunities, and a familiar school community. Our vision is that "all students will be empowered to achieve and thrive." We pride ourselves on our core values:

  • Community Engagement
  • Culture of Excellence
  • Global Citizenship
  • Respect and Inclusion
  • Responsible Stewardship
  • Rigor and Relevancy
  • Safety and Well-being

Hermosa Beach City School District has collaborative partnerships with staff and with outstanding community organizations such as Beach Cities Health District, Chevron, Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, Hermosa Beach Rotary Club, Grades of Green, Hermosa View, Vista, Valley PTO, Hermosa Beach Educational Foundation, and the City of Hermosa Beach. The strength of staff and community have led the District to achieve state recognition, including a Gold Ribbon, three Distinguished School Awards from the California Department of Education, Golden Bell Award, California Exemplary Program, Green Ribbon Award, South Bay Model SARB Program of Distinction, Sandy Hook Promise National Sustainability Award, Google Certified Teachers, as well as Northrop Grumman and other Leadership Fellowships.

Hermosa Schools are accepting a limited number of inter-district attendance permits this year. We encourage you to learn more about us and reach out. We believe our small size is what makes our student experience so special. If you would like to speak with Superintendent Dr. Jason Johnson, please give him a call at (424) 333-9975.
